Nel 120 A.D. la Nona legione dell’esercito romano marciò nei territori inconquistati della Britannia del nord. Non se ne seppe più nulla. Tutti i 5.000 uomini scomparvero con il loro prezioso stendardo…

Vent’anni da quel misterioso evento Marcus Flavius Aquila (Channing Tatum) giovane centurione romano viene assegnato al comando di un avamposto britannico, dove dimostra il suo valore difendendo la sua legione dall’attacco di alcune tribù celtiche e riportando gravi ferite che lo costringeranno ad un congedo forzato.

Marcus è il figlio del comandante della Nona legione la cui scomparsa improvvisa e misteriosa venne cosiderata come un atto di diserzione, gettando fango sul nome della famiglia del giovane centurione, intenzionato ad ogni costo a riabilitare il nome di suo padre che vide per l’ultima volta ancora bambino.

L’occasione arriverà con Esca (Jamie Bell) giovane schiavo britannico a cui Marcus salverà la vita legandolo così indissolubilmente al suo destino, Esca guiderà il centurione oltre il Vallo di Adriano che segna la fine del dominio romano e oltre il quale feroci tribù si spartiscono il territorio.

I due si avventureranno nelle terre sconosciute dove la Nona legione svanì, con la ferma intenzione di scoprire cosa sia realmente eaccaduto al quel plotone di valorosi  soldati e soprattutto per recuperare l’aquila, effigie dell’impero romano che rappresenta l’onore perduto della famiglia di Marcus.

Dopo il britannico Centurion approdato da noi direttamente in DVD ecco un’altro film,  stavolta una co-produzione anglo-americana, che prova ad ipotizzare cosa sia accaduto alla famosa Nona legione romana di cui realmente si perse ogni traccia durante il II° secolo, dando vita a svariate leggende.

Lo scozzese Kevin MacDonald, regista dell’acclamato L’ultimo re di Scozia, confeziona una pellicola solida che torna alle origini del cappa e spada con deriva avventurosa, non eccede in violenza e gore come il Centurion di Marshall, anche se la messinscena ricorda a piu riprese Il 13° guerriero di John McTiernan, evitando accuratamente l’utilizzo di CGI e ritocchi al computer, puntando invece  su suggestive location e coinvolgenti battaglie alla Braveheart che regalano  alla pellicola un’intrigante connotazione realistica.

Bravi i due giovani protagonisti Channing Tatum e Jamie Bell, il primo anche se non ancora pienamente in grado di sostenere un intero film sulle proprie spalle è in costante evoluzione e possiede a piccole dosi il carisma necessario a dare credibilità al suo centurione, mentre l’ex-Billy Elliot conferma di pellicola in pellicola un talento in crescendo.

Vista la prestigiosa firma del regista MacDonald e la presenza di Tatum, The Eagle potrebbe aver piu fortuna di alcuni film che ultimamente non hanno incontrato  l’interesse della nostra distribuzione, vedi il già citato Centurion piuttosto che l’interessante Black death dell’inglese Christopher Smith, approdando quasi sicuramente nelle nostre sale.

Note di produzione: la sceneggiatura di Jeremy Brock, che aveva già adattato per MacDonald il libro L’ultimo re di scozia del giornalista Giles Foden, stavolta è stata basata sul romazo storico del 1954 The Eagle of the Ninth della scrittrice inglese Rosemary Sutcliff, il film è recitato in inglese e gaelico scozzese, nel cast anche il veterano Donald Sutherland e Mark Strong che presto vedremo nei panni di Sinestro nel cinecomic Lanterna Verde.
